An Obstetric Gynecologist at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Dr Felix Abeiyifa Bowuo, says exposing an unborn foetus to nicotine can cause daftness in children.

According to him, expectant mothers who smoke and fathers who smoke in the presence of their Pregnant partners are prone to giving birth to a child who is daft.

“It is not advisable for expectant mothers to smoke or be around people who smoke because Cigarette, for example, contains nicotine which can affect the brain development of the unborn foetus leading to daftness”, he said.

He has also warned persons who smoke to quit the practice about 6 months before they get Pregnant to help prepare the womb for the process.

He spoke with Afia Amankwaah Tamakloe on Nyinsen Ne Awo) which airs every Sunday between 8-9: 00 PM.

The gynaecologist has also advised Ghanaians to consult doctors to help them plan before they get Pregnant.

According to him, this will help doctors perform all necessary tests to help plan a healthy pregnancy to help avert some pregnancy complications.

“In Ghana, it is not common practice for people to seek pre-conception care to plan their pregnancies. Those who do any form of planning do so with their spouses alone which is not the best,” he said.

He added that lack of health facilities and low awareness has contributed to this trend.

He, however, advised that Ghanaians must begin to take pre-conception care serious as it can help prevent some of the pregnancy-related complications.
