Dagbon Traditional Council announces third-day prayers for late Yaa-Naa Abukari II

The Dagbon Traditional Council has announced that the third-day prayers for the late Overlord of Dagbon, His Royal Majesty Ndan Yaa-Naa Mahama  Abukari II, will be held on Thursday, July 16, 2026, at the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi.

According to the Council, the prayers will commence at 10:00 a.m. and members of the public are invited to join the Royal Family and the people of Dagbon in offering prayers for the repose of the late King’s soul.

The announcement follows the burial of Yaa-Naa Abukari II in the early hours of Monday, July 13, within the sacred precincts of the Gbewaa Palace, in accordance with Islamic tradition and Dagbon customs.

In announcing his passing, the Dagbon Traditional Council described the late monarch as a symbol of peace, unity and reconciliation, noting that his reign was characterised by efforts to promote harmony and development across the Dagbon Kingdom.

The Council appealed to the people of Dagbon to honour the memory of the late Yaa-Naa by maintaining peace and avoiding acts that could undermine the unity he worked to achieve.

It also invited Ghanaians and friends of Dagbon to join the kingdom in observing the period of mourning through prayers and reflection.

The Council said details of the final funeral rites for the late monarch would be announced in due course in line with Dagbon customs and royal protocol.

Ndan Yaa-Naa Abukari II, who also served as President of the Dagbon Traditional Council and the Northern Regional House of Chiefs, died on Saturday, July 11, 2026.

His death has attracted tributes from government officials, traditional authorities, political leaders and members of the diplomatic community, who have praised his enduring legacy of peace and statesmanship.
