Government mourns Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II

The Government of Ghana has expressed profound sorrow over the passing of the Overlord of the Dagbon Kingdom, His Majesty Ya-Na Abukari Mahama II, describing him as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation and lasting peace to Dagbon.

In a statement issued by the Presidency on Monday, July 13, President John Dramani Mahama, on behalf of the Government of Ghana, extended his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon and the entire nation.

“The Government of Ghana has received with profound sadness the news of the passing of His Majesty Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II. On behalf of the Government of Ghana, His Excellency President John Dramani Mahama extends his deepest condolences to the Royal Family, the people of Dagbon, and the entire nation during this period of immense grief,” the statement said.

The government paid tribute to the late Ya-Na, noting that his unwavering commitment to unity, stability and the welfare of his people helped restore peace in Dagbon following years of conflict.

According to the statement, his leadership created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the partnership between traditional authorities and the government in advancing progress across Dagbon and the country.

“His Majesty will be remembered as a distinguished traditional ruler whose reign brought healing, reconciliation, and lasting peace to Dagbon following years of conflict. His unwavering commitment to unity, stability, and the welfare of his people created an enabling environment for development and strengthened the enduring partnership between the traditional authorities and the Government in advancing progress across Dagbon and Ghana,” it stated.

The government further honoured the late King’s service to the nation, describing his contribution as invaluable and expressing hope that his wisdom, leadership and dedication to peace would continue to inspire future generations.

“The Government pays tribute to the life and legacy of Yaa Naa Abukari Mahama II and honours his invaluable service to the nation. May his wisdom, leadership, and dedication to peace continue to inspire future generations,” the statement added.

The statement concluded with prayers for the peaceful repose of the late Ya-Na.
