A Political Aide to the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) 2028 flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Kofi Tonto, has accused the Mahama administration of using state institutions to persecute government critics, following the arrest of Dennis Miracles Aboagye.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Mr Tonto alleged that Mr Aboagye’s arrest was politically motivated because of his vocal criticism of the government.
“Dennis Miracle Aboagye is being persecuted because he is a strong critic of the failing Mahama government. I know he is resilient and will definitely overcome this alleged maltreatment. None of these actions will silence him or NPP communicators. President Mahama and his government are gradually using state institutions to silence dissenting voices,” he claimed.
According to him, the circumstances surrounding Mr Aboagye’s arrest raise concerns about the government’s commitment to due process.
“Miracles Aboagye is being persecuted. Why was he arrested at the airport? Since he was arrested, he didn’t have legal counsel. He was only provided one today,” he alleged.
Mr Tonto further claimed that the individual who petitioned the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) to investigate Mr Aboagye harboured a personal grudge against him.
“The person who wrote to EOCO to investigate Miracles said he was dismissed by Miracles from the Inter-Ministerial Committee after working there since 2012. So he has a personal vendetta against Miracles and is looking for ways to harm him,” he alleged.
He also referenced another case involving Gerald Appiah, arguing that unrelated matters were being linked together for political purposes.
“The Gerald Appiah case involved an audit over certain transactions, and he has already started paying back the money. Now Raymond Archer has made EOCO look like a political office by making it appear as though the two issues are the same,” he claimed.
Mr Tonto questioned whether the government’s anti-corruption drive was genuine or politically motivated.
“When you think about it, you wonder whether this government is fighting corruption or carrying out persecution because Miracles speaks against them,” he said.
Despite the development, he expressed confidence that Mr Aboagye would remain resolute.
“Miracles cannot be broken. It is unfortunate that the President is seeing all that is going on and is turning a blind eye. God will see him through,” he added.
