Former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has paid a heartfelt tribute to the late Yaa Naa Mahama Abukari II, describing him as a symbol of unity, strength and cultural pride whose reign brought renewed peace and dignity to the Dagbon Kingdom.
In a condolence message following the customary announcement of the overlord’s passing by the Gbewaa Palace in Yendi, Akufo-Addo said the late Yaa Naa joins the distinguished line of Dagbon rulers who have shaped the kingdom’s history and progress for more than three centuries.
The former President recalled the late King’s instrumental role in resolving the long-standing Dagbon chieftaincy crisis, noting that as Yoo Naa, Chief of Savelugu, he worked with other royal leaders to embrace a special peace arrangement that eventually paved the way for his enskinment as Yaa Naa during Akufo-Addo’s presidency.

Akufo-Addo also reflected on the honour bestowed on him in 2020 when the late monarch conferred on him the title “Naa Abudani” in recognition of his contribution to the Dagbon reconciliation process during the first Damba Festival celebrated after the King’s enskinment.
According to him, the title remains one of the honours he will always cherish.
He praised the late Yaa Naa’s reign, saying it was marked by a resurgence of unity, dignity, cultural renaissance and pride across Dagbon.

The former President urged chiefs, kingmakers and elders of the kingdom to preserve the late King’s legacy by ensuring a peaceful and orderly transition in accordance with Dagbon customs and traditions.
He welcomed news that a regent had already been successfully enskinned and appealed to Ghanaians to support the people of Dagbon during their period of mourning.
Akufo-Addo, together with his wife, Rebecca Akufo-Addo, extended their deepest condolences to the royal family, chiefs, elders and people of Dagbon, praying for the peaceful repose of the late King’s soul.
