Minister of State for Tertiary Education, Professor Kwesi Yankah has urged the National Accreditation Board to adopt measures that will tighten their vigilance over quality standards in distance learning.

Delivering the guest speaker’s address on the theme: “Celebrating excellence: Shaping the future of education in Ghana” at the University of Ghana, Legon, the Professor said “all the loopholes dragging the structure back must be plugged to improve its image.”

“The time is long overdue to indeed re-brand distance learning in Ghana. I hereby urge universities to take steps to arrest the perception of low standard output from Distance Education programs…” he said.

Distance learning has been adopted all over the world, to increase access and make learning flexible for candidates by defying distance, time zones and socio-economic difficulties associated with it.

According to Prof Yankah, despite the fact that it has produced some of the greatest men in history, it has also been noted to be liable to exploitation and gross abuse in this part of the world.

He however maintained that should respective authorities address their minds to those bottlenecks, it will help the mammoth number of students who seek to enroll into various universities in the country.

“Distance learning may be one important channel that could help the country to cope with the overwhelming influx of SHS graduates likely to knock on the doors of Universities, as from 2020…” Professor Yankah maintained.
