The Central Regional Chairman of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Bernard Allotey Jacobs has recommended the dissolution of the Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO).

He is of the view that the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) and Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are performing the same functions as EOCO and combining these institutions is the best way to go.

EOCO, he insisted is riddled with too many internal squabbles and incompetence and therefore should be dissolved as soon as possible.

“EOCO is only overlapping in their operations and I think they are only taking orders from Kennedy Agyapong and so I will suggest that the institution is dissolved as soon as possible. Who reported the matter to EOCO because GRA is even saying something different contrary to EOCO’s report?

“They (EOCO) are doing the same work as BNI and it’s the same people in those institutions and if they are dissolved, then I think it will help,” he argued on Adom FM’s Morning Show, ‘Dwaso Nsem’.

EOCO invited and interrogated Ibrahim Mahama, brother of former President John Mahama on accusations of financial malfeasance.

The businessman has been given a two-week ultimatum to defray the debt or risk having his goods confiscated and auctioned for the State to recover the amount.

He is to make the payment of GH¢12.7 million by Monday, May 8, 2017.

He has been a guest of the anti-graft agency for allegedly issuing in 2015, 44 post-dated cheques to the Customs Division, being duties for imports of equipment, but turned out to be dud cheques.

His company MBG Ltd. located in Tema – the harbor city of Ghana – which deals in the sale and rental of heavy duty vehicles and spare parts and one other Holman Brothers have been at the centre of the scandal.

But the NDC Chairman said the invitation by EOCO is a direct attack on the former president, John Mahama.

This notwithstanding, Mr Allotey Jacobs maintained that the NDC party is prepared to defend him (Mahama) and believes Mr Mahama will be vindicated.
