The Chairman of the Church of Pentecost, Apostle Eric Nyamekye, has sought to calm tensions following a recent controversy involving the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Free Zones Authority, Dr Mary Awusi, stating that the incident has rather increased the church’s visibility.

The backlash was triggered after Dr Awusi responded sharply to concerns raised by the church leader over the environmental impact of illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In response to the uproar, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah issued a public apology on behalf of Dr Awusi during his birthday thanksgiving service at the Pentecost International Worship Centre (PIWC), Trasacco, on Sunday, April 26, describing the remarks as a “slip” and appealing for calm.

Addressing the matter, Apostle Nyamekye said he holds no grudge and does not intend to escalate the issue.

“As for this lady, she has made me more popular. People like that I don’t think about because she has made my church and myself more popular,” he remarked.

He emphasised that differing opinions are part of public discourse and should not lead to prolonged disputes.

“If I held anything against her, I would have spoken about it at length. I think we all have our opinions on issues, so let’s forget about this issue,” he added.
