Ipswich Town manager Gary O’Neil has expressed confidence that Ghana international Abdul Fatawu Issahaku will make a significant impact after joining the club ahead of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
The 22-year-old winger completed a permanent move from Leicester City, signing a five-year contract that will keep him at Portman Road until June 2031.
Issahaku arrives after a successful three-year spell at Leicester, where he established himself as one of the club’s brightest attacking talents. He has already linked up with his new teammates at Ipswich’s pre-season training camp in La Manga, Spain.
Speaking after the transfer was confirmed, O’Neil praised the Ghanaian’s qualities and believes he has the attributes to succeed in the Premier League.
“Abdul is a young player who has already gained good experience in the game, and we’re excited to have him with us,” O’Neil told the club’s official website.
The Ipswich boss highlighted Issahaku’s athleticism, technical ability and attacking threat, describing him as a player capable of troubling defenders in one-on-one situations while adding depth and versatility to the squad.
“He has strong physical and technical attributes, is comfortable on the ball and can test the opposition in one-on-one situations, so will provide us with good options within the squad,” he said.
Issahaku joins Ipswich after featuring for Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where the Black Stars reached the Round of 32 before exiting the tournament following a narrow defeat to Colombia.
O’Neil believes the winger is ready to turn his attention to club football as Ipswich prepare for their return to the Premier League.
“Having represented his country at the World Cup this summer, I know he is now looking forward to getting to work ahead of the Premier League season,” he added.
With pre-season preparations in full swing, Issahaku will be aiming to settle quickly and establish himself as a key figure for Ipswich as they begin life back in the English top flight.
