Ghana’s Black Queens will discover their opponents for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup playoff tournament on Thursday, August 20, as they continue their bid to return to the global showpiece for the first time in 20 years.
The Black Queens missed out on automatic qualification after suffering a 2-1 defeat to Malawi in the quarter-finals of the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.
Ghana, however, kept their World Cup hopes alive by defeating Côte d’Ivoire 2-1 in the subsequent play-in fixture, securing a place in the FIFA playoff tournament.
The Black Queens have been placed in Pot Three alongside Ecuador for the draw. Pot One contains Chinese Taipei and Uzbekistan, while South Africa and Papua New Guinea make up Pot Two.
The tournament will begin with a preliminary phase in which each participating team will play three matches.
At the end of the preliminary stage, the top two teams in the standings will advance to the final phase, joining four nations that have already qualified directly for that stage.
Those four teams comprise two representatives from CONCACAF, Venezuela from CONMEBOL and one team from UEFA.
The final phase will be contested through single-match ties, with the three winners securing qualification for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
For Ghana, that means the Black Queens will have to negotiate four more matches if they are to secure a place at the tournament.
The Black Queens are aiming to end a long absence from the Women’s World Cup, having last featured at the global tournament in 2007.
Their qualification campaign now enters a crucial stage, with the August 20 draw set to determine the route Ghana must take to reach Brazil.
