The Ghana Police Service says it has brought under control violent disturbances that erupted at New Winneba in the Central Region on Tuesday, September 1, 2026.
According to the statement issued by the Public Affairs Unit of the Central Region , the incident occurred at about 10:40 a.m. when a mob of about 300 people, allegedly wielding guns, stones, cutlasses and sticks, stormed New Winneba Township.
The Police said the group, reportedly from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, attacked residents and allegedly vandalised stores and properties belonging to natives of the area.
The violence has reportedly left at least three people dead, while about 15 injured persons, including a police officer, have been sent to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for treatment.
Police personnel from the Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols have been deployed to contain the situation and restore calm.
The Inspector-General of Police (IGP) has also deployed a reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters, including two armoured vehicles, to strengthen security in the area.
The Police said the situation is currently under control, while assuring the public that further details would be communicated as investigations and security operations continue.
