Three reported dead, several injured after violent attack on New Winneba residents

At least three people have reportedly died and about 15 others sustained injuries following a violent mob attack in New Winneba Township in the Effutu North District of the Central Region.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, when a mob of about 300 people reportedly stormed the area, attacking residents and damaging properties.

According to a police report, the group, said to have come from Gomoa Oguakrom, Gomoa Yenkuadze and Gomoa Pomadze, allegedly wielded guns, stones, cutlasses, and sticks during the attack.

The mob reportedly targeted residents, shops and other properties belonging to natives of the area, resulting in widespread damage.

About 15 injured persons, including a police officer, have since been transported to the Trauma and Specialist Hospital in Winneba for medical attention.

The motive for the attack and the circumstances that triggered the violence have not yet been disclosed by the police.

Following the incident, personnel from the Central Regional Police Command, Winneba Divisional Headquarters and Agona Swedru District Patrols were deployed to restore calm and prevent further escalation.

The Inspector-General of Police, Christian Tetteh Yohuno, has also directed additional reinforcement to the area.

The reinforcement team from the National Police Headquarters includes two armoured vehicles to strengthen security operations in the affected communities.

The police say efforts are ongoing to bring the situation under control, with further details expected to be communicated as investigations progress.
