Director of Field Operations for the United Party, Hopeson Adorye has called for reforms to the law governing the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), including consideration of retired Supreme Court judges for the position.
Speaking on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem, Mr Adorye argued that appointing experienced retired judges could help strengthen the independence and effectiveness of the anti-corruption office.
He suggested that instead of consistently appointing younger professionals to head the OSP, government could consider individuals with extensive judicial experience who, in his view, would be better positioned to exercise authority without allowing personal ambitions to interfere with their work.
“Let’s take my favourite judge, Justice Dotse, for instance, as a Special Prosecutor. Even if it is four years, he will make an impact and work as he should,” he said.
Mr Adorye argued that retired Supreme Court judges, having spent years in public service, would bring maturity, legal expertise, and experience to the position.
He also suggested that the law establishing the OSP should be reviewed to address challenges surrounding the office and improve its effectiveness.
According to him, appointing younger individuals to the position could sometimes create tensions, particularly where personal ambitions or ego become factors in the discharge of their duties.
“If not, if we continue to appoint these young people, ego will always get in the way and there will be problems,” he said.
Mr Adorye therefore urged stakeholders to consider changes to the legal framework and explore a leadership model that could enhance the OSP’s credibility, independence and effectiveness in the fight against corruption.
