The La Dadekotopon Municipal Assembly says it will soon begin a major operation to arrest and seize stray cattle and other animals roaming within the Accra International Airport enclave and surrounding parts of the municipality.
The exercise, which will be carried out by the Assembly’s taskforce with support from the Regional Security Council, is aimed at addressing growing safety and security concerns linked to the movement of stray animals in the area.
Speaking in an interview with Adom News, the Municipal Chief Executive, Alfredos Nii Anyetei, said the decision follows repeated complaints from the Ghana Airports Company over the dangers the animals pose to flight operations and human lives.
According to him, some of the animals have been straying onto the tarmac, disrupting aircraft take-offs and landings and creating a serious security threat around the airport enclave.
He recalled that a few weeks ago, the Assembly issued a warning to owners of cattle and other animals in the area, urging them to cage or relocate them ahead of the planned enforcement exercise.
Mr. Anyetei explained that the owners were given a three-week ultimatum to remove the animals, but many failed to comply.
As a result, he said the Assembly is now preparing to move in and seize all stray animals found within the enclave and other affected areas.
The MCE added that the Assembly is currently awaiting final clearance from the Regional Security Council before the taskforce begins the operation.
He therefore urged animal owners to take advantage of the remaining time to remove their animals voluntarily.
Mr. Anyetei further warned that any animals seized during the exercise would not be returned to their owners, adding that offenders could also face fines or prosecution.
He emphasised that the Assembly is determined to act before any unfortunate incident occurs.
