The Black Starlets have been eliminated from the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) after a dramatic and rare tiebreaker saw Algeria progress on Wednesday in Rabat.

Both sides finished their group campaign level on points and with identical records, after Ghana secured a convincing 3-1 win over South Africa in their final match, while Algeria also ended on four points following a 2-1 defeat to group winners Senegal.

The deadlock between Ghana and Algeria proved impossible to separate through the standard tie-breaking criteria. Their head-to-head meeting had ended 2-2 earlier in the competition, and both teams were level on goals scored, goals conceded, and overall goal difference.

With no separation possible, CAF regulations required the final qualification slot to be decided by a drawing of lots. Algeria were picked first in the draw and therefore advanced to the quarter-finals, sealing automatic qualification for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.

The outcome brought a painful end to Ghana’s group-stage campaign, despite a strong finish.

However, the Black Starlets still have a route to the global stage. They will now face Uganda—coached by former Ghana international Laryea Kingston and a former Black Starlets mentor—in a playoff that will determine one remaining World Cup spot.
