Former Black Stars midfielder Ahmed Barusso has cautioned Ghana against underestimating Panama, insisting the team’s opening fixture at the 2026 FIFA World Cup will be crucial in shaping their group-stage fortunes.
Ghana begin their campaign against Panama on June 17 at BMO Field in Toronto, a match Barusso believes must be approached with urgency and precision if the Black Stars are to stand any chance of progressing from Group L.
The ex-AS Roma midfielder, who featured for Ghana at the 2008 Africa Cup of Nations, stressed the importance of starting strongly in a group that also includes England and Croatia.
“It won’t be an easy task. We should try and take our chances and deliver early because it’s the first game, and I think we should get the three points,” he told Citi Sports.
“It’s a must; if we don’t get the three points, then our chances of qualifying will be very difficult,” Barusso added.
Ghana’s group-stage journey continues with a high-profile clash against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23, before wrapping up the first round against Croatia on June 27.
