The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced that a Temporary Control Room being constructed at the Akosombo Switchyard following a recent fire incident is expected to be completed by the end of September 2026.
The temporary facility is being developed as part of emergency restoration efforts after the April 23, 2026 fire destroyed the switchyard control room and disrupted power supply across parts of the country.
Mr. Jinapor disclosed this during an inspection of ongoing restoration works at the facility, where he received a briefing from the management of the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) led by Ing. Frank Otchere.
According to the briefing, the Temporary Control Room will be equipped with modern control systems and enhanced fire protection measures to improve operational safety and continuity.
Government is also engaging stakeholders in the power sector on plans to construct an ultra-modern permanent Control Room to strengthen the resilience and reliability of Ghana’s electricity transmission infrastructure.
The Minister commended GRIDCo, the Volta River Authority and technical teams for their efforts to restore operations and reinforce the country’s power system following the incident.
