Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz believes Ghana has the foundations to evolve into a world-beating side as he begins his short-term mission with the national team.

The Portuguese tactician was officially unveiled in Accra ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he has been handed a four-month contract to lead the four-time African champions.

He replaces Otto Addo, who was dismissed following consecutive defeats during the March international window.

Addressing the media at the Alisa Hotel on Thursday, Queiroz struck an optimistic tone, insisting Ghana possesses the ingredients to compete at the highest level.

“In this moment, I have to put 99.9% of my attention on the results and the success of the World Cup,” Queiroz said.

“I wish God blesses me with the right and best results for Ghana, and if it happens as I expect, I will be very happy to give my contribution.”

The former Real Madrid manager also pointed to the country’s deep footballing talent, suggesting that with the right structure and long-term planning, Ghana can rise beyond its reputation as a producer of players.

“This is a country of footballers. I believe that the day Ghana will be able to manage the present and the future in this way, this country will not be only a country of footballers but a country of champions,” he added.

Queiroz will begin his tenure with a friendly against the Mexico national football team in May, followed by a clash with the Wales national football team on June 2 as part of preparations for the tournament.

Ghana, making their fifth appearance at the World Cup, have been drawn in Group L alongside the England national football team, Croatia national football team, and Panama national football team.

The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.

After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz is expected to guide Ghana toward a more competitive showing on football’s biggest stage.
