A Prestea ex-mine worker has raised concerns over layoffs and ongoing operations at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine.
He highlighted underground mining as a more sustainable and environmentally responsible option compared to surface mining.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen during its engagement in Prestea, the former mining operator argued that underground mining offers greater long-term benefits.
“Underground mining goes deep, and for that we have no environmental issues. We prefer underground mining because that’s where the money is,” he stated.
According to him, underground mining is less disruptive to the environment and delivers more lasting value, unlike surface mining, which is often associated with land degradation and environmental damage.
“Surface mining causes environmental issues. Underground mining is more permanent. Surface mining is not retainable,” he added.
His comments come at a time when former mine workers in Prestea have been protesting job losses and raising concerns over the transition to underground-focused operations by the new operators, Heath Goldfields.
While some workers argue that the shift has reduced employment opportunities, industry players maintain that underground mining represents a more sustainable and economically viable approach in the long term.
Heath Goldfields has maintained that its operations are being carried out under an approved Mine Development Plan and are supervised by the Minerals Commission of Ghana.
