Former mine workers in Prestea have expressed frustration over job losses and what they describe as a lack of engagement by the new operators of the Bogoso-Prestea Mine, Heath Goldfields.

Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen, which is currently in Prestea engaging affected workers, both men and women recounted being laid off despite having worked in the mines for several years.

According to them, the transition to the new company has been difficult, with many claiming they were dismissed without adequate consultation or clear communication.

“There was no proper community engagement. Today, there are no jobs in the area, and many of us who have worked in the mines for years have been laid off,” some of the affected workers lamented.

They also raised concerns about their severance packages, including SSNIT contributions and other entitlements, stating that they are unclear about how these are being handled.

“Other companies that operated here did not treat us this way. We don’t even know what is happening with our severance and other benefits,” they added.

The situation, they say, has worsened unemployment in the area, leaving many families struggling to cope.

However, Heath Goldfields has rejected what it describes as inaccurate claims about its operations.

In an earlier statement, the company said allegations circulating in the public domain misrepresent key facts and its legal and operational standing.

Heath Goldfields maintained that operations at the Bogoso-Prestea Mine remain active and are being carried out under an approved Mine Development Plan, supervised by the Minerals Commission of Ghana.

The company insists it remains committed to due process and stakeholder engagement, even as concerns continue to be raised by former workers in the community.
