New Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has paid glowing tribute to his predecessor, Otto Addo, during his official unveiling in Accra, acknowledging the foundation laid before his arrival as Ghana prepares for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The experienced 73-year-old tactician has signed a short-term four-month deal to lead Ghana into the global tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, taking over from Addo, who was dismissed in March following defeats to Austria and Germany.
Despite his exit, Addo leaves behind a significant legacy, becoming the first coach to guide Ghana to two World Cup qualifications—2022 and 2026.
Under his tenure, the Black Stars also went unbeaten in the 2026 qualifiers, topping Group I with 25 points.
Queiroz was quick to acknowledge that achievement, insisting his role is to build on—not erase—the progress already made.
“We must improve the legacy of the previous coach, Otto Addo. I thank him very much for qualifying Ghana for the World Cup; that is our goal.”
The Portuguese coach stressed a measured and analytical approach rather than sweeping changes, revealing that his technical team is already studying the squad in detail.
“We are studying and analysing everything related to the past of the team in order to improve.”
He also emphasised a frank assessment of player quality and team structure, insisting that selections for the World Cup will be based strictly on merit.
“We are making an honest assessment of where we stand—the value of the players, the value of the team.”
“There is a difference between a good decision and a bad decision in football… we must bring the right players to build the right team.”
Ghana will make their fifth appearance at the FIFA World Cup in 2026 after being drawn in Group L alongside England, Croatia, and Panama.
The Black Stars open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
Queiroz has been tasked with steering Ghana beyond the group stage, following exits in 2014 and 2022, as expectations rise for a stronger showing on football’s biggest stage.
