A safety expert at the University of Cape Coast (UCC), Dr. Ebenezer Ankomah Gyamera, has warned that ignoring basic fuel and gas safety measures could lead to a serious disaster if urgent attention is not given.

His caution follows a viral video showing a man in a white Mercedes-Benz dangerously speeding around a fuel station, with smoke visibly coming from the vehicle.

The incident has raised concerns over unsafe behaviours often observed at fuel stations, including making phone calls and leaving vehicle engines running during refuelling.

Describing the situation as alarming, Dr. Gyamera stressed, “We must not take safety precautions at fuel and gas stations lightly. If this attitude continues, it could lead to a disaster one day.”

He criticised the tendency of some people to ignore risks until tragedy strikes. “In Ghana, many people wait until something unfortunate happens before they start looking for someone or something to blame, sometimes even attributing it to spiritual causes,” he said.

Highlighting the need for personal responsibility, he added, “God has given us the ability to think and reason, so we must use common sense and act responsibly instead of assuming nothing will happen.”

Dr. Gyamera further noted that overreliance on faith without caution can be dangerous. “Some people believe that by the grace of God nothing will happen, but that mindset can be risky if we ignore basic safety rules,” he explained.

He also called for improved enforcement of safety regulations at fuel stations. “Fuel attendants must be given proper training, and there should be security personnel on-site to ensure that safety regulations are strictly followed,” he advised.

He concluded by urging the public to take safety measures seriously and adhere strictly to guidelines to prevent avoidable disasters.
