The Mayor of Accra, Michael Kpakpo Allotey, has cautioned residents participating in the government’s Nkoko Nkitinkiti Poultry Initiative against consuming the birds when they mature.
He reminded beneficiaries that the programme, introduced by President John Dramani Mahama, is intended to help participants sell the fowls and generate income to boost the local economy.

The caution came in response to a question from Assembly Member for the Ngleshie Alata Electoral Area, Festus Nii Ayi Hayford, after the Mayor delivered his sessional address at the first ordinary meeting of the Third Session of the Ninth Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) on Wednesday.

Mayor Allotey explained that beneficiaries are expected to rear the birds responsibly to produce eggs and support small-scale enterprise, rather than diverting them from the programme’s intended purpose.
He also announced the formation of a five-member committee by the AMA to monitor compliance, conduct field verification, and address any misuse of the birds.

The Mayor noted that the birds, currently about five weeks old, are expected to start laying eggs within two to three weeks. He stressed that proper management could expand economic opportunities for beneficiaries and contribute to wider local economic activity in the metropolis.
He concluded by expressing appreciation to Members of Parliament and Assembly Members for their support, emphasizing that unity and teamwork are essential for delivering results and sustaining development interventions across Accra.
