Ghana’s Attorney-General and Minister for Justice, Dominic Akuritinga Ayine, has thrown his full support behind Chief State Attorney Sylvia Ama Adusu as the country’s nominee for election to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in 2026.

In a formal endorsement, Dr Ayine described Dr Adusu as a seasoned legal expert with over 30 years of public service, citing her significant contributions to Ghana’s maritime legal framework and international dispute resolution. He noted that her nomination reflects Ghana’s commitment to the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the peaceful settlement of maritime disputes.

Dr Adusu, a key member of the Ghana Boundary Commission, has played a central role in high-level negotiations with neighbouring countries on maritime boundaries, earning recognition for fostering regional cooperation and providing expert legal counsel on law of the sea matters.

“This is the first time a Ghanaian woman has been nominated for election to ITLOS,” Dr Ayine emphasized, adding that her candidacy would enhance gender representation in international adjudication and inspire broader inclusion in global legal institutions.

The endorsement has also received backing from President John Dramani Mahama, who praised Dr Adusu’s integrity, strategic insight, and dedication to rules-based governance, expressing confidence in her potential contribution to the Tribunal.

Ghana’s nomination is seen as part of efforts to strengthen its voice in international maritime law and reinforce its standing as a country committed to upholding global legal standards.
