The Nkwanta South Municipal Assembly, in collaboration with the Regional Security Committee (REGSEC) and the Municipal Security Committee (MUSEC), has announced a ban on all public gatherings during the Christmas and New Year festivities in the municipality.
The directive affects church conventions, religious services, and all other public events within Nkwanta South and its surrounding communities. It forms part of heightened security measures aimed at maintaining peace and stability amid ongoing security concerns in the area.
Speaking to Adom News, the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE), Joseph Antwi Awal, said the decision is intended to prevent any attempts by individuals or groups to incite unrest, while safeguarding the lives and property of residents.
He noted that for the past four years, residents have been unable to fully enjoy Christmas celebrations due to persistent insecurity, making the precautionary measures necessary.
The MCE assured residents that security agencies will remain on high alert throughout the festive period and urged the public to strictly comply with all safety directives. He warned that security patrols will be intensified, particularly after curfew hours, and that anyone found loitering will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
Mr Awal commended the security services for their continuous efforts to restore and maintain peace, stressing that a stable environment is critical for economic growth and development.
He further cautioned drivers, commercial motorbike riders (okada), and residents to remain vigilant and avoid activities that could threaten the relative calm currently being maintained in the municipality.
