Newly appointed Black Stars head coach Carlos Queiroz has described his role in leading Ghana to the 2026 FIFA World Cup as one of the most special moments of his coaching career.
The 73-year-old Portuguese tactician has signed a four-month contract to steer the four-time African champions through the tournament in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Queiroz takes over from Otto Addo, who was dismissed following Ghana’s disappointing March international break, which saw the team suffer back-to-back defeats against Austria and Germany.
Speaking shortly after meeting Sports and Recreation Minister Kofi Adams ahead of his official unveiling, the former Real Madrid and Egypt coach expressed pride and excitement about his new challenge.
“I just want to say thank you. I just want to express how I feel inside my heart now,” the former Iran coach said.
“To be part of Ghana’s sports family is a privilege and honour for me. I know that some of you are aware that I have strong African roots.
“I was born and raised in Mozambique, and so leading Ghana, an African country, to the World Cup is unforgettable and a special memory in my life,” he added.
Queiroz is expected to be formally introduced to the Ghanaian football community at 1:00 pm at the Alisa Hotel.
He will begin preparations with international friendlies against Mexico and Wales as part of Ghana’s build-up to the tournament.
Ghana national football team will be making their fifth World Cup appearance and have been drawn in Group L alongside Panama, England and Croatia. Ghana will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
After group-stage exits in 2014 and 2022, Queiroz will be tasked with guiding Ghana to a stronger performance on the global stage.
