Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has donated science equipment, chemicals, and reagents, among others to the Science Laboratory Technology Department of the Accra Technical University.

The donation which happened on Tuesday, May 15, at one of the laboratories of the university formed part of GNPC’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR), Dr Kwame Amoah Baah-Nuakoh, General Manager for Sustainability of GNPC said.

“It formed part of our CSR. We have to build science labs to be at the level with those abroad. It won’t be necessary to send students outside because they will have the world class services here”, he said.

Among the items donated were a Gas Chromatograph with 5 cylinders, water bath, and various chemicals including assorted acids and alkali, safety equipment and a fume chamber.

Others were glassware, centrifuge, heating mantle and several other things that were necessary for the lab.

According to the Dean of Applied Sciences of the university, Mr Martin Owusu Amoamah, the donation of the items came at the right time because the department lacks such equipment due to the high cost of such equipment.

He further noted that the university in pursuit of its mandate to train students hands-on in various disciplines will need the donated tools to achieve competency-based training in the science and technology departments.

“We teach practical things; not only theories. GNPC’s donation came at the right time. We have eight labs but they are barely equipped… We know the government can’t do it alone and we thank them for the donation”, Mr Owusu said.
