The Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has appointed Christian Agyare as its new Vice-Chancellor for a four-year term beginning August 1, 2026.
The appointment was announced in an official statement signed by the university’s Registrar, Benjamin B. Owusu, following the University Council’s 292nd Special Meeting held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026.
According to the statement, the Council considered and approved the report of the Search Committee tasked with selecting a new Vice-Chancellor before confirming Professor Agyare’s appointment.
Professor Agyare, a Professor of Pharmaceutics and current Provost of the College of Health Sciences at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, is expected to serve from August 1, 2026, to July 31, 2030.
He will succeed Rita Akosua Dickson, whose tenure as Vice-Chancellor ends in July 2026. Professor Dickson made history in 2020 as the first woman to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of KNUST.
During her tenure, the university recorded significant growth in research, infrastructure development, international partnerships and digital transformation initiatives.
The transition in leadership attracted considerable public attention in recent weeks following reports alleging political interference in the selection process. However, the university rejected the claims, insisting the process was transparent, professional and conducted in line with established institutional procedures.
Professor Agyare is widely respected in academic and research circles for his contributions to pharmaceutical sciences, research and higher education administration. His appointment is expected to usher in a new phase of leadership for one of Ghana’s leading public universities.
