The Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has pledged says it will give two million dollars to some four universities in the country, over the next four years.

Dr Kwame Amoah Baah-Nuakoh, General Manager for Sustainability of GNPC made the revelation when he donated some items to the Science Laboratory Technology Department of Accra Technical University on Tuesday.

According to him, the amounts will be given to the University of Ghana, Legon, Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University of Cape Coast (UCC) and the University of Science and Technology in Tarkwa (UMaT).

He noted that the gesture formed part of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the GNPC to boost the educational sector to be at par with international standards.

Dr Amoah said the initiative will convince many parents and students to further their studies in the country instead of raising funds to send wards abroad.

He added that there would be professorial chairs at the various universities to coordinate the project.

“We are giving them $250,000 USD for four years…they have to build science labs to be at the level of universities abroad. It won’t be necessary to send students outside because they will have the world class services here”, he said.

Dr Amoah also disclosed that GNPC has enrolled about 900 Senior High School (SHS) students on scholarship programmes deemed to put the nation forward in terms of educational development.
