The former chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC) Dr. Kwadwo Afari-Gyan has called on politicians to desist from “rushing” the commission in declaring electoral results.

This, according to him, will ensure results declared by the commission will pass for acceptance by all stakeholders involved in an election with little rancor.

“When elections have been done, it takes time to compile results and results must be compiled very, very carefully,” he averred Wednesday on the sidelines of a STAR-Ghana event in Accra.

“We shouldn’t rush the Commission to declare election results. We should allow them to do a checking and rechecking,” he added.

Commenting on the 2016 elections, the first to be held in the fourth republic without his supervision, Dr. Afari-Gyan extolled the impartiality exhibited by his successor, Charlotte Osei.

Without mincing words about the success of the elections, he said the elections went “reasonably well.”
