Underground Mining Alliance (UMA) has donated $2,000 to support the expansion of the emergency unit at Saint Elizabeth Hospital in Hwidiem in the Ahafo Region.

The donation forms part of efforts to improve emergency healthcare services at the hospital, which serves as the largest referral facility in the region.

Presenting the cheque, UMA’s Human Relations Officer, Bertha Yeboah, told Adom News that the current emergency unit has a capacity of only eight beds, a situation she described as inadequate for a hospital that caters to patients from across the region.

She explained that although Saint Elizabeth Hospital is outside the company’s operational area, management considered it necessary to support the facility because of its critical role in providing healthcare services to residents throughout the Ahafo Region.

Mrs. Yeboah noted that expanding the emergency unit would help improve patient care and enable the hospital to accommodate more emergency cases.

Receiving the donation, the Hospital Manager, Sister Georgina Quayson, expressed gratitude to UMA for the gesture and appealed to other organisations and individuals to support the project.

She stressed that improving the emergency unit should be a collective responsibility, noting that the hospital wants to avoid situations where patients are turned away because of inadequate bed space.

According to her, an eight-bed emergency unit is insufficient for a major referral hospital, making it necessary to upgrade, expand and eventually construct a larger and more modern facility.

Meanwhile, the District Chief Executive for Asutifi South, Benjamin Assabil Donkor, called on mining companies, philanthropists and Ghanaians living abroad to contribute towards the expansion project.

He pledged his support for the initiative and assured residents that he would work closely with stakeholders to help secure a modern and befitting emergency unit for the hospital to improve healthcare delivery and save more lives.
