The Minister for the Interior, Mohammed Muntaka Mubarak, has announced that the government will set up an investigative committee to determine the cause of the building collapse at Avenor in the Greater Accra Region, which claimed two lives.
The three-storey structure collapsed on Sunday, June 7, reigniting concerns about building safety standards, regulatory compliance, and the structural integrity of buildings across the country.
Speaking to journalists during a visit to the scene, Mr. Muntaka expressed concern about the increasing number of building collapse incidents and stressed the government’s commitment to uncovering what led to the tragedy.
He said a formal investigation would be conducted to establish responsibility and recommend measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
According to the Interior Minister, although it is too early to indicate when the committee’s findings will be ready, authorities will ensure the process is handled swiftly.
“We are going to set up a committee to investigate but it will be very difficult for me to stand here and say when the report will be out but I believe we will be very swift so we can prevent these things from happening.”
Mr. Muntaka also urged Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to strengthen enforcement of building regulations and ensure that engineers and technical officers diligently carry out their responsibilities.
“We want the assemblies and their engineers to be up and doing so that we can support them to have a very safe environment when it comes to granting building permits and I believe my colleague Local Government minister will speak with the MMDCEs to do the right thing.”
The minister noted that stricter adherence to building regulations and effective monitoring of construction projects are critical to preventing future disasters and safeguarding lives and property.
