Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Thursday, January 1, 2026, Dr Asah-Asante said the fight against galamsey remains a critical test for the government, stressing that failure to resolve the menace could push the administration into opposition.

“We also want to see the fight against galamsey. Government cannot renege on its promise to fight galamsey head-on because I can tell you without fear of contradiction that if the government doesn’t fix that problem, it is one of the things that can send the government to opposition,” he stated.

Dr Asah-Asante cited the worsening water situation in parts of the Central Region, particularly Winneba and surrounding communities, as evidence of the growing impact of illegal mining activities.

“I can assure them because if you look at the Central Region now, Winneba and its environs, people are buying a gallon of water for five cedis, and the rest of them. This is not good news because water is life and people need it at all times,” he said.

According to him, the initial determination shown by the government in addressing galamsey appears to be fading, raising concerns among the public.

“The zeal and the passion with which the government started to deal with it appear to me that it is dying down because if you listen to the news in recent times, they are talking about the fact that the government has failed to prosecute people who have crossed the line relative to galamsey,” Dr Asah-Asante noted.

He therefore called on the government to intensify its efforts and take decisive action against offenders.

“If that is anything to go by, then I expect the government to step up its game,” he added.

Dr Asah-Asante further warned that illegal mining continues to threaten public health and the country’s food security through water pollution and contamination.

“Look at the turbidity levels of water and the contamination that we have in terms of the food we consume and export. I believe that the government must sit up and begin to work and work well,” he stressed.

Kpandai parliamentary row driven by politics, not law – Dr. Asah Asante https://www.adomonline.com/kpandai-parliamentary-row-driven-by-politics-not-law-dr-asah-asante/ Wed, 10 Dec 2025 09:44:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2608863 Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has said the ongoing tensions in Parliament over the Kpandai election case are driven by politics rather than law.

Speaking on the AM Show on Wednesday, December 10, Dr Asah-Asante explained that after listening to the Majority Leader’s comments, it was clear to him that the matter had taken a political turn.

“From what I listened to from the majority leader… my understanding is that it’s nothing but pure politics and tactics that they employ, other than law,” he said.

He said that whatever actions Parliament takes cannot overrule a court ruling. “Whatever decision they took in Parliament, if the court pronounces today otherwise, or contrary to what they are saying, the decision of the court will remain the same.”

For that reason, he described the confrontations in the chamber as needless.

“I do not see the point of that attitude… that unruly behaviour in Parliament is needless. It’s nothing but politics,” he said.

Dr Asah-Asante pointed out that Parliament’s attempt to declare an MP persona non grata would not stand if the courts ruled in favour of that MP. “You can declare the person persona non grata in Parliament, but the court will reinstate the person if the court deems it fit,” he noted.

He criticised what he described as unnecessary political posturing. “All these things are unnecessary, very, very unnecessary,” he said, insisting that the actions appear “nothing but political decisions, other than legal decisions”.

On whether confrontations in Parliament are becoming normalised, Dr Asah-Asante said the structure of the House makes such tensions likely. “If you look at the numbers in Parliament… the minority can do their best, but the majority will have their way because of the numbers.

“Every time you see the majority bulldozing their way through using their numbers, you can’t help it. That is the situation on the ground,” he explained.

Dr Asah-Asante urged both sides of the House to adopt a more cooperative approach for the sake of national interest.

“If we really, as a society, want to make the best use of the numbers in Parliament for the best of our people, then there must be cooperation, there must be consensus… to ensure the survival of government business, and by extension, satisfaction of our interests,” he said.

Mahama’s reparation talk at UNGA was out of place – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-reparation-talk-at-unga-was-out-of-place-dr-asah-asante/ Wed, 01 Oct 2025 11:50:16 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2584375 The Head of the Centre for European Studies at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised President John Mahama’s call for reparations during his recent address at the United Nations General Assembly, describing it as misplaced.

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante acknowledged that many people have praised the former president’s UN speech as bold and visionary.

“It is an apt description of a speech from a leader who is visionary, who fears nobody, and a leader worth his salt.

“I have no problem with that, and I concede to a large extent that yes, the speech had what it takes to be presented at that forum,” he said.

However, he said he disagreed with the part of the address that focused on reparations for slavery.

“The president touched on the issue of reparations, and that is where I have a difficulty,” he said.

Drawing on history, Dr Asah-Asante said Africa’s role in the transatlantic slave trade cannot be ignored. “If you look at the history of the slave trade, it was not committed by one person. In every market, there is the demand and there is the supply. Who were those who supplied the slaves? Our people here, chiefs, opinion leaders, and all that. We sold our people into slavery,” he said.

“So that exercise, if there is a problem, it cannot be borne by only one person. It takes two to tango. We sold our people, people bought them, and then used them for whatever purpose they wanted.

“That argument for me has been discussed and discarded, and I was not looking forward to hearing my president recounting that because it can never be sustained anywhere,” he added.

According to him, while the slave trade was “distasteful” and its methods “inhuman,” Africans must also admit their complicity. “With all due respect to Mr President, I disagree that Africans qualify for any reparations because we were part and parcel of the slavery,” he said.

Dr Asah-Asante recalled his own visits to slavery heritage sites abroad and recognised the pain associated with that history, quoting the late historian Professor Adu Boahen, who once described slavery as “an unmitigated misery.”

“But I believe that Africans were part and parcel of it even before the transatlantic trade, we also had domestic slavery. What about that?”

I expected Bawumia to resign from NPP – Political Analyst [Video] https://www.adomonline.com/i-expected-bawumia-to-resign-from-npp-political-analyst-video/ Fri, 22 Aug 2025 15:36:04 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2570196 Political analyst Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has lauded former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as a capable leader, even as he acknowledged the challenges that marred his reputation during the second term of the Akufo-Addo administration.

According to him, he expected the 2024 New Patriotic Party(NPP) Presidential Candidate to resign from the party as a result of the setbacks suffered.

However, speaking on Prime Morning on Joy Prime following the latest Global Info Analytics poll, which shows Dr. Bawumia commanding 52 per cent support in the 2026 NPP presidential primaries, Dr. Asah-Asante said his qualities remain undeniable despite political attacks.

“I have no doubt in my mind that he is a great leader. People say all manner of negative things about him because of politics, but I beg to differ. He is solid and knows his stuff,” he stated.

Dr. Asah-Asante explained that Bawumia’s early record as head of the Economic Management Team won him public praise in the first term of the Akufo-Addo government.

However, he noted that in the second term, when the economy faltered, the burdens of government weighed heavily on him, particularly because of his prominent role.

“He was caught in a certain quagmire within Akufo-Addo’s administration. He lacked the courage to step out, so the burdens of government continued to rub off him simply because of the position he held. In the first tenure, he worked well and took the credit, but in the second there was a dip, a serious one. I was expecting him to resign,” he said.

Despite this, Dr. Asah-Asante maintained that the Vice President is “a fine gentleman” and has what it takes to lead the NPP, though the economic downturn remains a blot on his political record.

The survey shows Dr. Bawumia commanding 52% support among NPP delegates ahead of the party’s presidential primaries, giving him a decisive edge over his rivals.

His closest challenger, former Assin Central MP Kennedy Agyapong, trails far behind with 17%. Other aspirants fared poorly, with Dr. Bryan Acheampong polling 3%, former Education Minister Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum 1%, and former General Secretary Kwabena Agyapong, Boakye Agyarko, and Addai Nimo each recording less than 1%.

If NDC stays on course, Ghana will reach its destination – Dr. Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/if-ndc-stays-on-course-ghana-will-reach-its-destination-dr-asah-asante/ Wed, 18 Jun 2025 10:20:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2545872 Political Scientist and Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed strong optimism that Ghana can achieve its development goals if the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government maintains its current trajectory.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr. Asah-Asante commended the government’s early achievements while emphasising the need for steadfast focus and commitment to ensure the country reaches its intended destination.

“I am hopeful, and I have no doubt in my mind that this government has started well,” Dr. Asah-Asante remarked.

“I hope and pray that they remain afloat and deliver on all the promises made to the people. From the little that is happening, there is hope. If they stay on course, we will reach our destination.”

Directing his message to President John Dramani Mahama, Dr. Asah-Asante urged the administration to prioritise economic restructuring and industrialisation as cornerstones of its Reset Agenda.

“Mr. President, economists and financial analysts have long stressed the urgent need to restructure Ghana’s economy to create opportunities and meaningful employment so that people can earn a decent living. I fully support this view and urge you to place it at the heart of your Reset Agenda,” he said.

He further highlighted the importance of leaving a lasting legacy rooted in industrial development.

“You must not leave office without establishing a robust and sustainable industry. Industrialisation is widely recognised as the key driver of economic transformation, and it should be part of your enduring legacy—not an industry that fizzles out after your tenure, but one that thrives and creates lasting jobs for Ghanaians.”

Drawing attention to Ghana’s rich agricultural resources, Dr. Asah-Asante spoke of the untapped potential for value addition and job creation.

“Consider the abundant crops and fruits we cultivate. Can’t we process these, add value, and generate employment? During former President Kufuor’s tenure, he was introduced to 14 different products derived from cocoa. I believe initiatives like these can ignite new industries.”

He believes that with a sustained focus on economic restructuring and industrialisation, the nation can secure lasting progress and build a strong legacy.

He made a heartfelt appeal to the President: “Mr. President, this must form part of your legacy. That is my message to you.”

Lecturer blasts politicians for hypocrisy over Sammy Gyamfi’s dollar gift saga https://www.adomonline.com/lecturer-blasts-politicians-for-hypocrisy-over-sammy-gyamfis-dollar-gift-saga/ Wed, 14 May 2025 13:02:43 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2534913 Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has criticised politicians for what he describes as sheer hypocrisy in their handling of the controversy involving a dollar gift from NDC Communications Officer Sammy Gyamfi to self-styled evangelist Patricia Oduro Koranteng, popularly known as Nana Agradaa.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, Dr. Asah-Asante described the situation as unfortunate but cautioned against treating it in isolation.

“It is unfortunate that what happened has happened. It is borne out of indiscretion—nothing more, nothing less. So my view is that the government will investigate and take an appropriate decision on that,” he stated.

He acknowledged Sammy Gyamfi’s public apology, describing it as a step in the right direction.

“Once you do that, it shows remorse. You have to show remorse, and it’s in there. There is also the fact that you have weighed your actions and, for that matter, you want to assure the public that there will not be a repeat of such an action,” he explained.

Dr. Asah-Asante noted that accepting responsibility voluntarily is a key part of good governance.

“It is a fine thing in politics that once you realise that you have gone wrong, you, on your own volition, come out to say that you are wrong. That is in line with governance processes.”

However, he said the larger issue lies in the double standards that characterise Ghanaian political life.

“Another issue that I can find in this area is the issue of hypocrisy in Ghanaian politics. I am not saying this to defend Sammy Gyamfi or whoever, but the hypocrisy here is that if you look at people giving gifts to their followers or their party people, look, a lot of political parties and politicians are guilty in this country.”

He cited a common practice among MPs that goes unchallenged.

“There are MPs who complain that their constituents besiege them in their offices and take money from them. Have we, as a society, commented on that?”

Dr. Asah-Asante also dismissed suggestions that the act would have been acceptable had it been done in private.

“Some are saying Sammy should’ve given the money in private—that would’ve passed. But you ask yourself, if it’s not okay in public, will it be okay in private? You see the hypocrisy in here.”

He pointed to a cultural dilemma in reconciling traditional values with professional ethics.

“We have been socialised as a society to give to the needy, to support and lend a helping hand. But when we do this, we are also caught in the ethics of our profession that say you shouldn’t do this or that.”

He warned that this confusion could present challenges for public officers in the future.

“There is a danger ahead of us as to whether people, especially public officers, can help those in need without coming under fire.”

Dr. Asah-Asante also highlighted gaps in the code of conduct regarding the giver of gifts.

“If you read the code of conduct, it is silent on the giver of a gift but talks about the recipient. What happens to the one who gives, and the person who receives and puts pressure on you? There are a lot of big conversations around this.”

He concluded with a call for national reflection.

“In light of societal demands and all that, I will urge people to reflect on the fact that, as a Ghanaian society, giving gifts or accepting gifts—is it wrong or is it not? If there’s a way we have to look at it, let’s look at it.”

Low voter turnout was a protest vote – Dr Asah-Asante counters NPP narrative on 2024 election defeat https://www.adomonline.com/low-voter-turnout-was-a-protest-vote-dr-asah-asante-counters-npp-narrative-on-2024-election-defeat/ Wed, 23 Apr 2025 17:42:21 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2527990 Political scientist Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has challenged the narrative offered by the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, regarding the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections.

In an interview on JoyNews‘ The Pulse on Wednesday, April 23, he argued that the low turnout among their supporters was a deliberate protest vote.

His remarks come in response to comments made by Dr. Bawumia during the launch of the NPP’s nationwide Thank You Tour, where he attributed the party’s loss to internal issues, particularly the failure of their supporters to show up at the polls.

Dr. Asah-Asante, however, believes the lack of voter participation should not be dismissed as mere disinterest but as a powerful political message from the party’s base.

“If they’ve gone to the field to pick data and introduce what their data is saying, fine. “But I hold a different view. In political science, when you expect 20 people to vote for you, and only 10 do, the remaining 10 have protested against you. It’s a protest vote.”

He explained that even though these supporters did not physically cast their ballots, their absence represented a form of indirect voting — a conscious decision to withhold support as a signal of dissatisfaction with the party’s leadership or direction.

“They knew very well that even if they had gone, the numbers would have increased — and yet they stayed away. That action, in itself, is a vote against you. It’s not that they didn’t vote; they voted with their absence,” Dr. Asah-Asante noted.

He urged the party to take a deeper introspective look at the reasons behind the loss, especially considering the dramatic reversal from the NPP’s significant electoral victory just four years earlier, with over a million-vote margin.

“Why is it that the same group of people did not want them to stay in power? That’s the real question they should be asking,” he stated.

Muster courage and go by dictates of report – Dr. Asah-Asante to NPP https://www.adomonline.com/muster-courage-and-go-by-dictates-of-report-dr-asah-asante-to-npp/ Thu, 17 Apr 2025 16:06:42 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2526447

Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has urged the New Patriotic Party (NPP) to demonstrate bold leadership by fully embracing the recommendations in the report presented by its fact-finding committee on the party’s 2024 electoral defeat.

His comments follow the presentation of the report by the 12-member committee, which was tasked to investigate the party’s loss in the 2024 general elections. The committee submitted its findings to the NPP’s national leadership on Wednesday, April 16.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr. Asah-Asante described the post-election review exercise as a necessary and commendable step. However, he emphasized that the true test lies in how the leadership responds to the findings.

“I think that what they have done is a good thing. Anytime a party goes into an election, it is important to examine what went wrong. You gather the facts, assess the findings, and begin to address the issues—whether at the national, regional, or constituency levels. Any lingering problems within the political structure of the party must also be tackled head-on,” he stated.

Dr. Asah-Asante further cautioned the NPP against tampering with or diluting the content of the report.

“They should muster the courage and go by the dictates of the report without adding or subtracting anything. If they do this, then they can be confident that they are on the right path,” he advised.

He warned that any attempt to short-change the process by ignoring parts of the report or sweeping critical issues under the carpet would be detrimental to the party’s future.

Public deserves answers on both alleged drug scandal, Adwoa Safo issue – Dr. Asah-Asante to NPP https://www.adomonline.com/public-deserves-answers-on-both-alleged-drug-scandal-adwoa-safo-issue-dr-asah-asante-to-npp/ Tue, 08 Apr 2025 10:21:55 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2522850 A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has expressed disappointment over comments made by the General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Justin Kodua Frimpong, regarding the party’s focus.

Mr. Kodua had suggested that the NPP’s primary concern is the alleged drug trafficking scandal, rather than addressing internal party matters involving former Dome-Kwabenya MP, Adwoa Safo.

In an interview on Joy FM’s Top Story, Dr. Asah-Asante acknowledged the seriousness of the drug trafficking issue but stressed that internal party issues, such as the controversy surrounding Adwoa Safo, are equally important to the public interest.

“I am not happy with the statement from the NPP General Secretary who said that they were more interested in the alleged cocaine story. That is important — there’s no doubt about that — but this is also equally important,” Dr. Asah-Asante said.

He argued that the public deserves transparency and full disclosure on all matters of national interest, especially when they involve public office holders.

Dr. Asah-Asante called on the NPP to give adequate attention to both the alleged drug trafficking scandal and the internal disciplinary matters involving Adwoa Safo. He emphasized that the public has a right to understand the actions of political leaders and expects the party to handle both issues with transparency.

“We want to see the logical conclusion of the story by the party. The individual who is alleging must also be able to provide the necessary information for us to get to the bottom of this matter,” he added.

His comments come after Mr. Kodua revealed that the NPP had postponed its meeting with Adwoa Safo, originally scheduled for Monday, due to the ongoing drug trafficking scandal. The General Secretary stated that the party is now focusing on questioning the government over the matter, rather than engaging in internal party politics involving Safo.

Mahama is ready to do business – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/mahama-is-ready-to-do-business-dr-asah-asante/ Fri, 17 Jan 2025 12:30:29 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2494149 A Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, believes that President John Mahama is prepared to do serious business looking at his ministerial appointments so far.

According to Dr Asah-Asante, from various perspectives, he has sensed the president’s intention to act swiftly and efficiently without delay.

“I think that the President is ready to do business and looking at so many perspectives, you can understand that he has hit the ground running,” he remarked.

His comments came after the president released a list of ministerial nominees to key sectors, including the Ministry of Education, Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry, Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and Ministry of Youth Development and Empowerment.

The first three were the nominations for Finance, Energy and Ministry of Justice and Attorney General.

Speaking on the AM Show on JoyNews, Dr Asah-Asante said, “The calibre of people he wants to nominate for these positions, that is, from the point of view of those individuals, they are people with experience, both academic and professional, bringing them onto this type of business.”

He said in politics, someone doesn’t need to have a political background before being appointed to a position. He emphasized that anyone can be appointed as long as they possess the qualifications and abilities to manage public office effectively.

The political science lecturer lauded the president for his intentional efforts to achieve gender balance in his ministerial nominations for key positions across various sectors.

“In terms of constitutional and other requirements, you can see this appointment having a manifestation in that regard. Let’s look at the issue of gender. You can see gender featuring as part of the requirements from our rules and regulations regarding ministerial appointments,” he remarked.

Dr Asah-Asante expressed confidence in President Mahama’s commitment to achieving his goal of 30 per cent of political appointments for women.

“I have no doubt in my mind that he can go beyond the 30% with the way he has started” he noted.

Gradual reduction of E-Levy better than complete abolishment – Dr Kwame Asante https://www.adomonline.com/gradual-reduction-of-e-levy-better-than-complete-abolishment-dr-kwame-asante/ Fri, 10 Jan 2025 12:56:52 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2491620 Political Scientist Kwame Asah-Asante says a phased reduction of the Electronic Levy (E-Levy) would be a more feasible approach than its outright removal.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Friday, January 10, Dr Asante explained that while the E-Levy remains unpopular, its complete removal could harm the country’s financial stability.

According to him, rather than abolishing the E-Levy entirely, the government should focus on reducing the tax burden gradually.

“The best approach is to reduce the incidence of taxation over time, as these are the low-hanging fruits that can be effectively utilised,” he said.

While acknowledging the discomfort caused by the 1.5 per cent levy, he pointed out that it has become a vital source of revenue for the state.

“We have lived with this burden, and we are moving on,” Dr Asante remarked, noting that the country already bears several other taxes that place a strain on the public.

He suggested that a gradual reduction of the E-Levy would make it easier for more people to comply, which in turn would increase participation and government revenue.

Dr Asante also emphasised the importance of generating domestic resources for the country’s development. “You can never build the capacity of the state without generating your own resources,” he said.

He cautioned against relying too heavily on external funding, stressing the need for innovative solutions, such as increasing internally generated funds, to support long-term growth.

Answer to Parliament’s impasse lies at the Supreme Court – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/answer-to-parliaments-impasse-lies-at-the-supreme-court-dr-asah-asante/ Wed, 23 Oct 2024 09:14:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2463385 A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr Kwame Asah-Asante has said the only way to resolve the current impasse in Parliament over the announcement of vacancy of four seats is for both sides of the House to argue their case at the Supreme Court.

“The Supreme Court’s ruling, generally, is the law and everybody needs to obey it. You may not like the Supreme Court’s ruling, but you can only use law to remedy the situation and say you are going to challenge it and all that. When the Supreme Court rules, it has ruled. It requires obedience. That will be the rules of the decision of the Court,” he said.

He was speaking in an interview with Graphic Online after the Speaker of Parliament, Alban S.K. Bagbin on Tuesday afternoon [Oct 21, 2024] adjourned the house indefinitely due to the lack of quorum to take decisions.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) side had earlier walked out over a disagreement on sitting arrangement on which side formed the majority in Parliament.

The disagreement over the sitting arrangement followed a ruling by the Speaker last Thursday, that declared four seats vacant on the grounds of crossing carpet following the affected Members of Parliament’s decision to file for the December 7, 2024 parliamentary elections in different capacities, either as independent candidates or on the ticket of a political party.

Negotiation

Dr Asah-Asante noted that the indefinite adjournment of the proceedings would greatly affect government business especially at a time when parliament was considering the approval of Supreme Court nominees, tax waivers for certain companies and the passage of several bills.

He therefore explained that, in order to get government business back on track, the leadership of the two sides would have to go to the negotiating table, hammer out their differences and find common ground or compromise which satisfies both sides.

“I am optimistic that they will weather the storm and come back. There have been difficult times, not to this level anyway, but certain similar situations have occurred in the life of Parliament over the years. The Parliament was able to surmount that challenge, and live up to the expectations of the people of this country, he said.

“So I am very much sure that they will not disappoint themselves in the first place. And then disappoint the country that they work in, and then disappoint democracy that we have struggled over the years to build and nurture and strengthen to the level that we have today,” the Senior Political Science Lecturer added.

Wake-up call, Jurisprudence

Dr Asah-Asante described the political situation as a wake up call for Ghana’s democracy emphasising that the political brouhaha was creating awareness and would allow the government to establish a jurisprudence for future situations just like the court had once before declaring parliament a master of its rules in certain decisions.

“I believe that the time has come for this country to rise up to build a certain jurisprudence in this area, saying that areas that the courts will come in, in terms of problems that face the Parliament, will be areas of pure legal issues,” he said.

“Also saying that issues that have certain political nature, we are going to reserve it for political actors to handle. If the country takes that decision and builds jurisprudence around this one, I’m sure we will always save our courts, Parliament, and whole society all the trouble that we are going through. But as of now, you realise that some of them are still grey areas that we have not touched upon,” Dr Asah-Asante said.

NDC manifesto gives Ghanaians hope – Dr Asah- Asante https://www.adomonline.com/ndc-manifesto-gives-ghanaians-hope-dr-asah-asante/ Mon, 26 Aug 2024 11:07:17 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2438945 Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, says the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto provides Ghanaians with a vision of hope and a clear roadmap for the future.

He stated that the manifesto outlines various challenges facing the country and presents solutions aimed at addressing them.

Dr Asah-Asante noted that the manifesto not only highlights existing problems but also reflects the party’s evolving ideology.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on Monday, August 26, he said, “It also underscores their ideology in a certain way that is also commendable. We have seen a lot of them and we continue to see improvement. If you look at what they churned out last elections, we have seen changes. It is important and it is to be expected.”

“That is a function of what they have picked on the ground and that they want to hop on certain things and then de- emphasise on certain areas and bring in other areas to bear on society,” he said.

Dr Asah-Asante explained that although the manifesto addresses every challenge facing the country, it must be evaluated to ensure its promises align with the needs and interests of Ghanaians.

He suggested that thorough scrutiny and questioning are essential to verify the feasibility of the proposed policies and the party’s capability to deliver on their commitments.

“They should not have something that will be at variance with our interests. What they have, I know it reflects the true position of the situation on the ground,” he said.

Let’s not glorify politicians, it’s time to hold them accountable – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/lets-not-glorify-politicians-its-time-to-hold-them-accountable-dr-asah-asante/ Tue, 20 Aug 2024 08:21:46 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2436153 Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has urged Ghanaians not to glorify politicians but to hold them accountable for unfulfilled promises.

According to him, politicians who fail to deliver on their commitments should be voted out.

Dr Asah-Asante’s comments were made in response to the recurring pattern of unfulfilled promises by politicians, particularly during election periods.

Speaking in an interview on Joy FM‘s Newsnight on Monday, August 19, he said there should be public engagement to question the politicians on how they intend to fund the promises being made to bring to the understanding of the ordinary Ghanaian.

“What we also have to do is find out in detail how they are going to undertake these projects and when we are not satisfied, we should not glorify political parties saying that this is a party part of our tradition and that the leaders are part of our ethnic group and all that.

“We should not glorify them, we boot those people out if there is the need to do that. But more often than not, Ghanaians have looked on and have glorified politicians even though they did not serve their interest in the name of tradition, ethnicity, religion and whatnot. We tend to shy away from the truth and then we come back to complain,” he said.

According to him, it is time to take a different step to hold them accountable, adding that it is the work of electorates to do so.

“Remember that after all vigilance is the price of liberty. If you are not vigilant you are not going to get what you are supposed to get from public officers.

What will the NPP be admitting to if they apologise? Asks Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/what-will-the-npp-be-admitting-to-if-they-apologise-asks-dr-asah-asante/ Tue, 06 Aug 2024 16:43:41 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2429964 Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has questioned what the New Patriotic Party (NPP) would be admitting to if they issued an apology for the current economic hardship.

This Member of Parliament for Assin Central, Kennedy Agyapong wants the NPP to acknowledge the current economic hardships in the country and apologise.

“Let’s go out there with humility, apologise to Ghanaians, and admit your mistakes before you can convince anybody to vote for you. If we ignore the hardships Ghanaians are going through, they will never accept what we are saying.”

But according to Dr Asah-Asante, would such an apology acknowledge mismanagement of the economy or other factors would be blamed.

Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show on August 6, he said, “If you want to render an apology, we want to know a few things. Which of the problems we are facing do you want to admit that you have caused? Are they saying they have mismanaged the economy? Or are they still talking about the fact that it is Russian-Ukraine war?”

“If they want to apologise, we want to know. They should come clean and then be able to give us all the details that, we are apologising for our part, then we know,” he said.

He also pointed out that while an apology might not guarantee acceptance from the public, it is an important aspect of good governance.

“The fact that you have apologised does not mean that people will accept. But it’s a good thing in governance that you admit your fault. Whether people take it or not is another issue but at least you have come to what Aristotle calls self-introspection. You have examined your life and then you are coming out.

“Even though this one is at the instance of Kennedy Agyapong and all that, it is still within the party,” he said.

Political Analyst compares Jane Naana, Napo’s candidature after NIB survey  https://www.adomonline.com/political-analyst-compares-jane-naana-napos-candidature-after-nib-survey/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 15:05:14 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411112 A Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana has drawn a comparative analysis between the National Democratic Congress (NDC) running mate, Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang against Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku as New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer.

Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante has highlighted the duo’s performances as former Education Ministers in their respective government as well as their political experience.

His assessment comes after a survey by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) revealed that Dr Prempeh is widely preferred among party members as the running mate to the NPP flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

In an interview on Adom FM Dwaso Nsem, Dr Asah-Asante said they both excelled in their portfolios, adding the Manhyia South performed better as Education Minister than in his new role as Energy Minister.

However, he acknowledged Prof Jane Naana stands tall with regards to her experience in the education sector having risen through various ranks.

“They are both great people and have strong qualities as running mates. Jane Naana rose from being a lecturer to a professor and that is not a journey for light headed people. So she is experienced in education and Napo has also done well. But if Jane Naana is at Bolga, Napo is at Tamale,” he explained.

Touching on their political differences, Dr Asah-Asante noted Napo unlike Prof Jane Naana has been a parliamentarian but they are both popular in the country.

Opoku Prempeh is bold and courageous, not arrogant – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/opoku-prempeh-is-bold-and-courageous-not-arrogant-dr-asah-asante/ Thu, 20 Jun 2024 13:32:06 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2411064 A Senior Political Science Lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Asah-Asante, has dismissed assertions that Energy Minister, Dr Matthew Opoku Prempeh is arrogant.

Dr Asah-Asante has said the Manhyia South MP is only courageous, bold and does not shy away from speaking his mind.

His assessment follows a survey by the National Investigation Bureau (NIB) which revealed that Dr. Prempeh is widely preferred among NPP members to be the running mate to its flagbearer, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia.

Dr Prempeh secured 76.2% of the vote from the 5116 executives who participated in the survey.

Minister of Education and MP for Bosomtwe, Dr Yaw Osei Adutwum, who came second, garnered 10.16%.

Other notable personalities the delegates consider for the role include Apostle Opoku Onyinah, former Chairman of the Pentecost Church-Ghana, and Bryan Acheampong, the Minister of Agriculture and MP for Abetifi Constituency.

However, in an interview on Adom FM’s morning show Dwaso Nsem Thursday, the lecturer said he has no doubt in his mind on Napo’s candidature, stating the survey has a true reflection of the situation on the ground.

“His boldness and free spirit make him distinct and stands tall among the other candidates. Politics is not meant for the faint-hearted and coward, we can’t use them for anything,” he stated.

In a related development, as Dr Bawumia faces the challenge of choosing his running mate, the survey revealed that there was a strong consensus that the person should be selected from the Ashanti Region.

Ejisu by-election: Manipulation of electorates will take place night before polls – Dr Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/ejisu-by-election-manipulation-of-electorates-will-take-place-night-before-polls-dr-asah-asante/ Tue, 30 Apr 2024 04:57:22 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2387878 As electorates of the Ejisu constituency prepare to go to the polls today in a highly anticipated by-election, a Political Scientist at the University of Ghana believes there is intense maneuvering and last-minute tactics by competing candidates.

Dr Kwame Asah-Asante in his submission on JoyNews’ PM Express said that the evening before the polls was going to be a busy night in the Ejisu constituency.

He noted the night preceding an election usually witnesses a flurry of activity, including attempts at influence, inducement, and manipulation.

According to him, the strategy and resources of competitors during what he termed “the night before” the election could play a crucial role in determining the poll’s outcome.

“What will play out will be your strategy, resource, and the way you organise what is termed ‘the night before’. This night, I tell you things are going to happen.

“There’ll be a lot of influence, you are going to see inducement, change of mind, and manipulation to the highest level, and that is where you will see the dominant party model against rational choice,” he said on Monday.

Referencing the Info-Analytic poll on the Ejisu by-election, Dr Asah-Asante noted that it was going to be a difficult race.

Nonetheless, he believed the competitors who exploit the ‘night before’ efficiently stand a chance over the opponent.

“With Info analytics publishing their polls that if there is going to be a winner, it will be by a slim margin, this means that it is a game for everybody.”

Ejisu by-election: Your statement reckless, irresponsible – Asenso-Boakye told https://www.adomonline.com/ejisu-by-election-your-statement-reckless-irresponsible-asenso-boakye-told/ Tue, 23 Apr 2024 14:19:01 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384667 A senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has condemned the Minister for Roads and Highway, Francis Asenso Boakye over his comments made in Ejisu.

According to the lecturer, the comments are reckless and irresponsible, especially coming from an MP and Minister of State.

“The comment is reckless, irresponsible and underserving of a minister. The people give you power through their votes, so don’t think you are there for yourselves.

“Being in power shouldn’t make you an authoritarian or give you the chance to ride on people. You can’t talk to people in this manner. That is not how to rule a nation,” he said.

Mr Asenso Boakye addressing Ejisu constituents ahead of the by-election advised them to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate instead of another on April 30.

The Minister who doubles as Bantama MP explained that it would be difficult for any other candidate aside that of the NPP to come to him and lobby for projects if voted for.

Reacting to this on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem Tuesday, Dr Asah-Asante said the Minister’s statement a paint a bad picture.

“The government is supposed to be for all and not some people. Once you become discriminatory, you have deviated from democracy, where the interest of the people is supreme.

“The constitution mandates government to give even and balanced development regardless of people’s political affiliation, so how can he say the other candidates cannot come and lobby for development,” he stated.

Despite his reservations, he said the comments may not influence the outcome of the by-election in anyway because constituents in the Ashanti region are not really influenced by political messages.

Meanwhile, some electorates say they prefer to vote for former MP, now independent candidate, Kwabena Owusu Aduomi because although his party was in opposition, he was able to lobby for road projects.

They believe it is therefore untrue that nothing can be done by an MP in opposition.

Bawumia running mate: Delayed announcement could pose challenges – Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-running-mate-delayed-announcement-could-pose-challenges-asah-asante/ Mon, 22 Apr 2024 10:22:40 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2384028 A senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, raised concerns over the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Dr Mahamudu Bawumia‘s delay in announcing his running mate for the 2024 election.

According to him, comprehensive and broader consultation before announcing the running mate is important.

However, Dr Asah-Asante has said the prolonged delay could pose challenges and the party must therefore quickly name its candidate.

“The party must be mindful of the fact that time is not on their side. Yes, you want to consult broadly but you can’t spend all your life on that. By now, they should be out with a candidate who has all the qualities that they want so that it doesn’t delay the campaign unnecessarily.

“If you wait, the issue is that you bring the person in, then the person now comes to face with the campaign already set in motion. People will now want to scrutinize the person, they will want to assess the person, and they will want to throw all manner of things at the person and that is the best means by which you can see how best you can shepherd your candidate and then prepare him/her for the task ahead. I think the delay is becoming too much. I think the party must quickly come out with a running mate,” he said in an interview on Accra-based Citi FM.

Per the NPP’s constitution, a running mate is to be selected 12 months before a major election if the President is not the candidate.

Following Dr Bawumia’s election as flagbearer on November 4, 2023, he was expected to name his running mate on December 6, 2023.

However, at a crunch meeting with the National Executive Council (NEC), he requested an extension of time for further consultations on the choice of running mate.

Bawumia used his speech to redeem himself – Asah-Asante https://www.adomonline.com/bawumia-used-his-speech-to-redeem-himself-asah-asante/ Fri, 09 Feb 2024 22:37:19 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2354034 A Senior Political Science lecturer at the University of Ghana, Dr Kwame Asah-Asante, has suggested that Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia tried to use his address to the nation to redeem his reputation.

Dr Mahamudu Bawumia addressed the nation on February 7 to outline his plans and vision for the country and asked to be elected into office.

Among his policies were abolishing of a number of taxes such as the electronic transactions levy, the 15 percent VAT on electricity, the emissions tax, and an appeal for Ghanaians to elevate him from a “driver’s mate” to a driver.

Bawumia’s address has received severe backlash from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress. The National Communications Officer of the NDC, Sammy Gyamfi, argued that Dr Bawumia was distancing himself from the government, leaving President Akufo-Addo lonely and defenceless.

Dr Asah-Asante explained that this was the last chance for the New Patriotic Party flagbearer to restore people’s trust in him before official campaigns and propaganda began.

Speaking on JoyFM’s TopStory on February 9, he said “If you listen to Bawumia, what he said, there are a number of things that you can glean from it.

“That is the last opportunity for him to redeem himself from all the things he has said about previous governments which are rearing their ugly heads in this government.

“So it is your last time to make and make bold statements about it and then because people will continue to ask you to talk about an improvement in the economy, why are we where we are?

“You talk about the fact that you won’t go to IMF, you are there. You talk about the ills of the economy and all that, we still have them,”

He added that Dr Bawumia wanted to publicly announce that he disapproves of some governmental policies, which made him touch on the controversial e-levy and VAT on electricity, among other key policies citizens have constantly complained about.

“Another thing was that he wanted to do something about the advice, you remember that he said that the Economic Management Team is just an advisory body. He wanted to do something about the advice that they had given to the government that the government did not heed to.

“You recall that I said that I was expecting him, that when you give advice and it is not heeded to you vote with your feet, you leave the government. They said no that is not easy.

“You realise that he is not happy because if he was happy, he would not make that statement that look I  will cancel E-levy. From day one, Dr Bawumia didn’t like it and it came to pass. Obliviously, if you get an opportunity like this you want to touch on it,”  he added.

Voters will buy into Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy – Political scientist https://www.adomonline.com/voters-will-buy-into-mahamas-24-hour-economy-policy-political-scientist/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 14:05:31 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2322330 A senior political science lecturer at the University of Ghana (UG), Dr. Asah Asante has stated that voters will buy into former John Mahama’s 24-hour economy policy.

According to him, it is a good policy and could change Ghana’s economic dynamics.

Dr. Asante was reacting to Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s critic of the policy by the opposition leader.

He explained that, the 24-hour economy policy is being implemented in Ghana already at hospitals, fuel companies, among others.

Reacting to the Vice President’s comment on Accra-based Starr FM, Dr Asante said he did not expect anything less.

“Obviously you should not expect anything less than that from the Vice President. Because if this one is coming from the opposition and it is a good policy, obviously he will attack it. But truth must be told that what is good is always good” he added.

Dr. Asah Asante has no doubt in his mind that the 24-hour economy message which is being proposed by Mr. Mahama will travel a long way.

Mahama’s 24-hour economy is a fine policy, timely – Lecturer https://www.adomonline.com/mahamas-24-hour-economy-is-a-fine-policy-timely-lecturer/ Tue, 21 Nov 2023 12:32:20 +0000 https://www.adomonline.com/?p=2322161 A senior lecturer in political science at the University of Ghana, Asah Asante, has expressed support for former President John Mahama’s proposal to establish a 24-hour economy.

Mahama, who is the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to implement this initiative if elected in the 2024 general election, emphasizing its potential contribution to economic growth and job creation, particularly for Ghanaian youth.

Speaking on Accra-based Starr FM, Dr. Asah Asante asserted that the introduction of a 24-hour economy would be a significant game-changer.

He highlighted that many advanced countries around the world already operate on a 24-hour basis, whereas Ghana, along with a few other African and third-world nations, currently witnesses a more traditional work-rest cycle.

Dr. Asah Asante expressed optimism about the timing of Mahama’s proposal, stating, “It is good news, good timing, no doubt about that because you are making effective use of the human resources that we have in this country. Then we want to ensure productivity. That is the way to go.”

The senior lecturer emphasized the importance of utilizing both human and mineral resources effectively for a country’s progress.

In his view, embracing a 24-hour economy aligns with this objective and would enhance overall productivity in Ghana.
