A member of the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) legal team, Mr Abraham Amaliba has cautioned the Electoral Commission (EC) to stop acting like it just landed from the moon.
The comment follows a decision by the EC to conduct a limited registration exercise at its district offices ahead of the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen show, Thursday, Mr Amaliba, who confirmed the consideration of a law suit by the NDC, cautioned the EC to rescind its decision.
“We can understand the financial challenges of the EC and therefore do not think it will be wise for the registration to be at polling stations, but people have genuine reasons and will not be able to go to the district offices to register, so the EC should stop behaving like they just came from the moon,” he stated.
To Mr Amaliba, it is important for the EC to centralise the limited registration process to enable more eligible voters get their names into the register.
“There is a deliberate attempt by the EC to disenfranchise some people in Ghana because it doesn’t make sense to cut off people from the register. The EC must be interested in getting a lot of people on the register and not cut them off,” he added.
The NDC at a press conference said it will resist attempts by the EC to conduct the upcoming limited voters’ registration exercise at the district offices of the Commission.
According to the NDC, the move was not part of the issues discussed extensively during an Inter-Party Advisory Committee meeting held in March to discuss election related issues in Ghana.
