The Socialist Movement of Ghana (SMG) has expressed deep concern over an alleged incident of sexual misconduct involving a teacher and a student of Bole Senior High School, following the circulation of a video on social media.
In a statement issued by its Women’s Wing on June 16, the group described the contents of the video as disturbing and called for a thorough investigation into the matter.
According to the SMG, any allegation of sexual misconduct involving an educator and a student must be treated with utmost seriousness due to the power imbalance inherent in such relationships.
The movement noted that the authority and responsibility entrusted to teachers make it difficult to determine whether students can freely provide meaningful consent in such circumstances.
“A relationship between teachers and students is built on trust, authority and responsibility; therefore, situations where that trust is abused must be condemned, thoroughly investigated and appropriate sanctions applied,” the statement signed by Loretta Naa Dei Ashie, Women’s Leader of the Socialist Movement of Ghana, said.
The SMG stressed that educators must be held to the highest standards of professional conduct, given their role in shaping the lives and future of young people.
The group also expressed concern about what it described as a growing trend of inappropriate relationships between educators and students, warning that such incidents raise broader concerns about the safety of children within educational institutions.
It noted that some students may become vulnerable due to financial, emotional or material dependence, while others may feel pressured by the influence and authority wielded by teachers.
According to the SMG, these challenges require urgent intervention through stronger safeguarding mechanisms, enhanced monitoring systems, education and strict enforcement of professional boundaries in schools.
The movement reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of vulnerable persons, particularly girls, and insisted that conduct that undermines the dignity, safety and well-being of students must not be tolerated.
While acknowledging ongoing efforts by the Ghana Education Service and other institutions to strengthen child protection measures in schools, the SMG urged educational authorities, school administrators, parents and guardians to work together to create safer learning environments.
The group also called on the public to exercise restraint in their commentary on such incidents and advocated the creation of counselling services and safe spaces for victims of harassment and abuse in schools, homes and online platforms.
“The Socialist Movement of Ghana remains committed to advocating for accountability, justice and the protection of young people in our society,” the statement added.
