The Ghana High Commission in Ottawa has successfully distributed FIFA World Cup tickets provided by President John Dramani Mahama to Ghanaian supporters across Canada, giving members of the diaspora community the opportunity to cheer on the Black Stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The initiative comes as Ghana prepares to begin its World Cup campaign against Panama in Toronto on Wednesday, June 17.
In a statement, the High Commission confirmed that the tickets made available by President Mahama had been allocated to beneficiaries in different parts of Canada as part of efforts to mobilise support for the national team during the tournament.
The Mission expressed appreciation to the President for what it described as a thoughtful gesture that has enabled many Ghanaians living abroad to experience the World Cup firsthand while rallying behind the Black Stars.
According to the High Commission, the initiative has given members of the Ghanaian community in Canada the chance to be part of a significant moment in the country’s football history and demonstrate their support for the national team on the global stage.
“The tickets generously provided by His Excellency John Dramani Mahama have afforded many Ghanaians the opportunity to be part of this historic occasion and to proudly support the national team,” the statement said.
The High Commission also acknowledged the roles played by Minister for Sports and Recreation, Kofi Adams, and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, whose collaboration and support helped make the initiative possible.
Officials commended the two ministers for their efforts in ensuring the smooth implementation of the programme and a fair distribution process.
According to the statement, tickets were distributed through recognised Ghanaian community associations across Canada, while additional beneficiaries were selected through a random draw from individuals who had earlier expressed interest via email.
The High Commission said the process was designed to ensure fairness and inclusivity, allowing Ghanaians from various regions of Canada an opportunity to benefit from the limited allocation.
The Mission noted that interest in the tickets far exceeded the number available, highlighting the strong enthusiasm and patriotism of Ghanaians in the diaspora.
However, it acknowledged that due to the limited allocation, not all applicants could be accommodated.
The Black Stars will be hoping to draw inspiration from the expected support of Ghanaian fans in Canada as they begin their quest for success on football’s biggest stage.
