The Ghana Education Service (GES) has strongly condemned the assault on two teachers and the destruction of school property at Bawku Senior High School, describing the incident as a serious attack on discipline, safety and the integrity of the education system.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, GES said some students allegedly attacked the teachers and vandalised school property during the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Preliminary findings suggest the disturbance may have been triggered by the strict enforcement of examination rules and invigilation procedures.

Condemning the incident, GES said the conduct of the students was completely unacceptable and inconsistent with the standards expected in educational institutions.

“The actions of the alleged students are unacceptable, unjustifiable, and contrary to the core values of discipline, respect and integrity that underpin education,” the statement said.

The Service expressed particular concern about the attack on the teachers, stressing that educators carrying out their official responsibilities must be protected at all times.

According to GES, any form of violence or intimidation directed at teachers undermines the educational system and threatens the safety of staff.

“Management views attacks on teachers in the course of their official duties as a serious breach of school discipline and a threat to the safety of staff of the Service,” it stated.

To restore calm and ensure the safety of all persons on campus, security personnel have been deployed to the school.

GES assured parents, guardians and the public that both academic activities and the ongoing WASSCE examinations are continuing under heightened security measures.

“Security personnel have been deployed to the school, and normal academic and examination activities continue under enhanced protection arrangements,” the statement noted.

The Service also disclosed that the two injured teachers are receiving medical care and support following the attack.

“The affected teachers are currently receiving the necessary medical attention and support,” GES added.

Meanwhile, a full-scale investigation has been launched in collaboration with the security agencies to identify all those involved in the violence and destruction of property.

GES warned that individuals found culpable would face disciplinary sanctions as well as legal consequences.

“A full investigation is underway in collaboration with security agencies to identify all individuals involved. Those found culpable will face the full rigours of the law following GES disciplinary procedures,” the statement stressed.

The incident has heightened concerns about security and discipline in schools, particularly during national examinations, as authorities work to ensure a safe and conducive environment for both students and teachers.
