Members of Parliament (MP), as part of the World Press Freedom Day on Friday, May 3, 2019, have called for improved conditions of service from media owners to journalists.
Contributing to a statement on the Floor in commemoration of the Press Freedom Day, MP for Twifo Atti-Morkwa, Abraham Odoom said journalists in Ghana are vulnerable due to poor conditions of service.
“One thing that is worrying in our society that needs to be tackled is the salaries and conditions of service of journalists. They are so low making them vulnerable to scandals and other issues that affect their job. So as we are making these statements, it is important to urge media owners to improve these conditions,” he said.
MP for Aowin Constituency, Mathias Ntow bemoaned the lack of retirement packages for journalists in the country, adding that government must also protect journalists to discharge their duties diligently.
MP for Tamale South, Haruna Iddrisu also congratulated journalists on their contributions towards nation building.
He, however, described Ghana’s press freedom index moving from 23 to 27 as worrying.
Deputy Communications Minister, George Andah assured the media that the government was committed to ensuring their safety and urged them to work without fear or favour.
