The Obuasi District Assembly has been cited for financial malpractices after it emerged it used GH₵131,959 to construct a fence wall at the residence of the Municipal Chief Executive, Adanse Bona.

The situation, according to reports, is creating tension in the area with the possibility of it escalating after assembly members called for accountability.

A concerned citizen, Kingsford Boakye, popularly known as Piero, on Adom FM’s morning show, Dwaso Nsem said they were appalled by the incident.

He cited, among other things, how the Assembly rehabilitated a 4-unit classroom block for Presbyterian Primary School at New Nsuta at GH₵181,849.08 and constructed a 3-unit KG block and crèche at Sanso for GH₵320,392.00 to buttress his point.

Kingsford Boakye said these and many inflated costs of projects have brought divisions between some assembly members and the MCE.

He added that the assembly members and residents of Obuasi have vowed to ensure the MCE accounts for the money squandered.

But in a rebuttal, the Obuasi MCE, Elijah Adansi Bonah denied the allegations, insisting that the cost of projects have been well accounted for.

He said there was a cartel at the assembly working assiduously to ensure he is sacked because “I’m not allowing them to have their way”.

Mr Adansi Bonah revealed that immediately he was confirmed, a member of the cartel attempted to bribe him.

“When I refused the bribe, they vowed to make Obuasi ungovernable for me so I’m not surprised they are accusing me of squandering cash,” he opined.

As an anti-corruption crusader himself, Mr Adansi Bonah said he was committed to President Akufo-Addo’s fight against corruption and as such, wouldn’t allow anyone to corrupt him.
