The Prempeh Assembly District Court in Kumasi has convicted six persons for illegally dumping refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout at Kejetia in the Ashanti Region.
The offenders were arrested during an early morning sanitation operation conducted by the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) on Monday, May 11, 2026.
Presiding over the case, Her Worship Deborah Gyaawa Donkoh found the accused guilty after they pleaded guilty to the offence.
The convicts are Atta Gyamfi, 55; Manuna Ishawu, 24; Veronica Maako, 31; Mariama Iddrisu, 64; Kwadwo Amuzu, 37; and Ebenezer Atakorah, 25.
The court fined each offender 100 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢1,200, or in default serve a 10-day jail term.
Five of the convicts paid the fine, while Ebenezer Atakorah failed to do so and was subsequently sentenced to 10 days imprisonment.
Public Relations Officer of KMA, Henrietta Aboagye confirmed the suspects were arrested at about 5:30 a.m. while illegally dumping waste at the Otumfuo Roundabout.
According to her, the assembly mounted an operation following persistent complaints about indiscriminate refuse dumping in the area.
“We laid ambush this morning to arrest those who continuously dump refuse at the Otumfuo Roundabout, and we apprehended six offenders three women and three men,” she stated.
She explained that the suspects were handed over to prosecutors and arraigned before the Prempeh Assembly District Court.
Ms. Aboagye noted that the court applied the KMA sanitation by-laws in sentencing the offenders.
“The court fined each person 100 penalty units, amounting to GH¢1,200, or in default serve 10 days in prison,” she added.
The KMA has reiterated its commitment to maintaining cleanliness in Kumasi and warned that sanitation offenders will continue to face arrest and prosecution.
The assembly further urged residents and traders to make use of approved waste disposal sites and support efforts aimed at keeping the city clean.
