President John Dramani Mahama has called for the Ghana School Feeding Programme to temporarily absorb excess eggs on the market to help address the ongoing glut affecting poultry farmers.

The directive follows concerns raised by egg suppliers across parts of the country, who say a trade standoff with Burkina Faso has stalled exports for over two months.

The suspension of exports has led to a significant surplus in the local market, driving down prices and threatening the livelihoods of poultry farmers and distributors.

Speaking during a citizen engagement at the University for Development Studies in the Northern Region on Sunday, April 19, as part of his nationwide “resetting” tour, Mr Mahama assured that government is taking steps to resolve the export bottlenecks.

He noted that increased production under government-backed poultry initiatives has contributed to the surplus, leaving many farmers struggling to find buyers.

“As I speak now, there’s a glut in egg production. Poultry farmers are complaining that they can’t get a market for their eggs,” he said.

“And so, we must find a way for the school feeding programme to absorb the eggs and include them in meals for our children. If we can’t sell them, then let our children benefit from eating them,” he added.
