The Electoral Commission (EC) is setting itself to fail if it compiles a new Voters Register, General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketia has said.

He explained that, the exercise will rather create an avenue for political parties to register minors in their bid to win the December elections.

“We must get peaceful and transparent elections; that should be the objective of the EC not new register,” the NDC scribe opined.

The EC has set middle of May to compile a new Voters Register for the December elections in spite of stiff opposition from some political parties.

The Commission is certain it is the only way to deal with electoral fraud to ensure free and fair elections.

However, on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday, Mr Nketia said the EC is just embarking on an exercise in futility.

“We are going to have a more bloated register because the political parties will have the opportunity to register minors,” he revealed.

General Mosquito is convinced “the older the register the better for us since most of the underage voters in the register are now 18.”

The NDC scribe said the only way they would agree for the EC to compile a new register is for them to introduce a system which can detect the citizenship of an electorate.

“The challenge of having a bloated register has been with us since 1992 and no system has be able to correct it,” General Mosquito, as he is affectionately called, added.
