Family, friends, gospel musicians, and fans from across the country have gathered today, May 9, 2026, at Asuofua in the Ashanti Region to bid a final farewell to celebrated Ghanaian gospel musician Yaw Sarpong.
The late gospel icon, known for his inspirational songs and decades-long contribution to gospel music, is being laid to rest following a burial service and final funeral rites held at the Asuofua Town Park.
A lying in state was held earlier in the day, allowing mourners and admirers to pay their last respects to the musician whose music touched many lives across Ghana and beyond.
Final funeral rites are expected to continue later in the day at the Asuofua Town Park, while a thanksgiving service will be held on Sunday, May 10, at Sokoban Ampayoo, followed by a family gathering to conclude the funeral activities.
Yaw Sarpong passed away on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, at Emena Hospital, where he had been receiving treatment after battling ill health.
Widely respected for his humility, deep spirituality, and dedication to ministry, the gospel musician built a music career that spanned more than four decades.
His journey in music began at a young age when he joined the Methodist singing group at Asuofua. It was there that he was discovered by a medical doctor who was forming a music group in 1971, setting him on a path that would later make him one of Ghana’s most recognised gospel voices.
Over the years, Yaw Sarpong released numerous gospel songs and albums that became household favourites and sources of encouragement to many believers.
Despite his success and influence, the musician once revealed that his gospel career had not brought him the financial rewards many people assumed.
In an interview years before his passing, he disclosed that although he had released 27 albums, he had not received significant financial benefit from producers.
Nonetheless, his music and ministry continued to leave a lasting impact on generations of gospel music lovers.
Yaw Sarpong is remembered not only for the timeless songs he left behind, but also for the faith, passion, and humility that defined his life and ministry.
