The opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dragged Ghana’s Electoral Commission (EC) to court for failing to make available to the party the Voters Register as required by law prior to the commencement of the Voter Exhibition Exercise.
The decision to go to court was announced by the party’s chairman, Samuel Ofosu-Ampofo when he addressed the media at the party’s headquarters in Accra Thursday afternoon.
Laying the basis for the party’s decision to go to court, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said the Jean-Mensah and Bossman-Asare led EC had refused to take any advice from them as a party.
According to him, the EC had blatantly flouted the electoral laws of Ghana in the implementation of the Limited Registration Exercise, something the party said they had forewarned the EC about.
We have only one day left for the exhibition of the Voters Register to end yet the Jean-Mensah and Bossman-Asare led EC has not provided a copy of the 2019 register to as provided by law, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said.
To that end, Mr Ampofo said we have been compelled to go to court for an order directed at Jean-Mensah and Bossman-Asare Commission to, among others, give copies of the provisional register as provided by law.
This is after repeated requests and reminders by the NDC to the EC had failed, Mr Ofosu-Ampofo said.
