An unknown highway armed robber has been killed in a gun battle between highway robbers and police at Biremso on the Bunso -Anyinasin stretch of the Accra -Kumasi Highway.
According to the Kyebi Divisional Police Commander, DSP Mariam Osei-Adu Owusu, police had a distress call at around 1:30 am Thursday that armed robbers were attacking vehicles on that stretch of the road.
She said the Kyebi District night patrol team quickly rushed to the scene and upon reaching there, the highway robbers who were hiding in the bush smashed the windscreen of the police car with a big stone and started firing the gun at the police from the bush.
The police retreated and crossfire at the robbers in the bush and called for reinforcement at the Kyebi Divisional Commander.
DSP Mariam Osei-Adu Owusu told Adom News’ Maxwell Kudekor that, the national highway patrol team came in to support them to battle the robbers but their vehicle was also shot at.
The operations and cross firing of gun lasted for over three hours.
She added that the police discovered a dead body suspected to be one of the armed robbers at the scene at around 6 am and has deposited the body at the Kyebi government hospital mortuary.
Meanwhile, a number of vehicles were damaged by the robbers in the operations.
