The Ghana Police Service has issued a strong warning to social media content creators engaging in acts that border on criminality, revealing that one individual has already been arrested for posting a masked video threatening to kill security personnel.
Speaking at a press briefing, DCOP Grace Ansah Akrofi said the Service is increasingly concerned about the misuse of social media platforms to spread fear, misinformation, and violent threats under the guise of content creation.
“If you engage in any act, any behaviour, any conduct, in any shape or form that borders on criminality, the Ghana Police Service will fish you out, pursue you, arrest you and bring you to face the full rigours of the law,” she warned.
According to DCOP Ansah Akrofi, the suspect who appeared in the masked video threatening security personnel was successfully tracked and arrested by police investigators.
She said the suspect later returned online to apologise, claiming the video was intended as content creation, but stressed that such explanations would not excuse conduct that threatens public safety.
The Police Service also referenced another incident involving a group of individuals who dressed as bandits and shared threatening videos targeted at the Ghanaian public.
DCOP Ansah Akrofi disclosed that arrests were also made in that case.
She noted that beyond direct threats, the Police Service has observed a rise in online activities that create panic and contribute to the spread of misinformation and disinformation across communities.
According to her, the Service has intensified digital surveillance and online patrol operations to prevent criminal activities on social media platforms.
She urged content creators and social media users to act responsibly and remain mindful of the legal consequences of content that crosses the line into criminal conduct.
