Executive Council member of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Frederick Acheampong, has cited economic challenges as a major obstacle in getting their preferred coach, Hervé Renard.

“Hervé Renard has always been the preferred choice of the Ghana Football Association (GFA) since the departure of CK Akonnor, and while the coach is willing to coach Ghana, the economic circumstances make it difficult for us to hire him,” he said in an interview on Akoma FM.

The hunt for a new coach follows the dismissal of Chris Hughton due to Ghana’s disappointing performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament.

Despite successfully guiding Ghana through the qualification phase, the team’s ambition to end a 42-year trophy drought was thwarted by another group phase elimination, accumulating only two points.

A five-member committee has been established to recommend a suitable candidate to the GFA Executive Council.

The GFA is hoping to get Hervé Renard as Ghana’s head coach but Mr. Acheampong said they cannot pay him.

Hervé Renard worked with Black Stars as the physical trainer under Claud Le Roy during the 2008 AFCON hosted in Ghana. He has also won the AFCON twice with Ivory Coast and Zambia in 2012 and 2015 respectively.

Hervé Renard is the current head coach of France Women’s national team after leaving Saudi Arabia.
