The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has stormed the streets of the Nation’s capital, Accra, to seize cars they say did not go through necessary custom clearance.
The Commissioner General of GRA, Kofi Nti, told Adom FM Reporter, Kwame Kulenu that owners of the vehicle failed to pay the necessary duties for the vehicles.
According to him, most of the cars were brought through unapproved routes thereby evading the necessary duties hence the move to impound them.
Mr. Nti added that the same exercise was carried out last year by the GRA, leading to the confiscation of 754 vehicles were confiscated.
He added that some owners came to pay the required duties with penalties while owners who failed to do so, had their cars auctioned subsequently.
Currently, a number of seized cars have been parked at the garage of the GRA’s offices near Airport.
Head of Public Education and Media Relations, Johnson Yankey, explained to Kwame Kulenu that owners of the vehicles have failed to pay the required duties even though the GRA has given them ample grace period to do so.
All the said vehicles will be auctioned on May 1, – May 2, 2018 as required by law for interested persons to bid for them.
