Veteran Ghanaian musician and dancer Akosua Agyapong has advised mothers to raise their children responsibly and avoid comparing them to others, warning that such behaviour can negatively affect their growth and future.

She made the call during the third edition of her special Mother’s Day celebration, organised to honour the strength, resilience and unconditional love of mothers—particularly single mothers and widows who continue to sacrifice for their families and communities.

The event attracted several dignitaries and distinguished women from different sectors of society. Among those recognised were the Vice President, the Chief Fire Officer and her deputy, the Director-General of the Prisons Service, and the Greater Accra Regional Minister for their contributions to national development and women’s empowerment.

Speaking to Adom News, Akosua Agyapong stressed the importance of allowing children to grow according to their unique talents and abilities rather than forcing them to compete with their peers.

“Many women put unnecessary pressure on their children because they want them to be like others. Every child is unique and should be nurtured based on their individual talents and abilities,” she said.

She further cautioned that unhealthy competition and constant comparison could push some children into bad behaviour and negatively impact their future.

“When parents constantly compare their children to others, it can influence them negatively and lead them into bad behaviour,” she added.

Some women and group leaders who attended the event also called on mothers across the country to be more responsible in raising their children and to support one another in building a better society.

According to them, mothers must show love, discipline, and proper guidance to help raise responsible future leaders. “Women must support one another and guide their children with love and discipline so we can build a better society,” some of the group leaders stated.
