The government is set to roll out major infrastructure projects in Senior High Schools (SHS) across the country with support from the World Bank, as it seeks to address growing infrastructure challenges arising from the implementation of the Free SHS policy.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has disclosed that the World Bank is expected to approve a $300 million facility on June 16 to support the expansion of educational infrastructure nationwide.
Speaking during a surprise visit to Aburi Girls’ Senior High School to monitor the ongoing 2026 WASSCE examinations, the minister said the funding will be used to upgrade 30 Category C schools to Category B status, and 20 Category B schools to Category A.
According to him, the initiative is aimed at expanding school capacity and improving facilities to ensure the smooth implementation of the Free SHS programme.
The minister, who was accompanied by the Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES) and other senior officials, also addressed concerns about food supply in schools.
“I am happy that, at least, there is no food shortage in schools this year. The feeding component is now being managed by GETFund, with a GHS4 billion allocation this year,” he stated.
The development comes as government continues efforts to improve conditions in second-cycle institutions while sustaining gains made under the Free SHS policy.
